Southeast Asian Stream

Fast flowing forest streams found across Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Clear water with rocks, sand and dense vegetation.

Ecological identity

What makes this biome unique

This biome represents Asian streams with soft to moderate current, well-oxygenated water and marginal vegetation. It supports dynamic communities with rasboras, danios, small loaches, gobies and fish that use flow without requiring an extreme hillstream setup.

How to recreate it

Combine flow zones with calm breaks. Use stones, smooth gravel, sand and hardy plants. The key is useful current for the fish, not simply maximum flow.

Best for

Aquarist profile

Ideal for aquarists who want an active Asian aquarium with visible schools and curious bottom fish, without the technical demands of a pure hillstream build.

Not recommended

Avoid it if...

Not suitable for very slow fish, stagnant-water species or low-oxygen setups. It should also not be overloaded with too many midwater species.

Maintenance

Expected routine

Clean prefilters regularly and prevent flow loss from debris buildup. Keeping oxygenation and surfaces clean matters more than making the aquarium sterile.

Example aquarium

Suggested composition

Example aquarium: 80-150 liters with mixed substrate, rounded stones, light wood and riparian plants. A filter outlet aimed along the tank creates continuous flow without overwhelming all areas.

Suggested species
Zebra danio Harlequin rasbora Clown loach Kuhli loach Siamese algae eater Amano shrimp Horned nerite snail Pagoda snail
Recommended plants

Microsorum, Bucephalandra, hardy Cryptocoryne, mosses attached to rocks and robust marginal plants work well if flow does not uproot them.

Common mistakes explained

What usually breaks this biome

  • Poorly directed current: may stress schooling fish if no resting areas exist.
  • Low oxygenation: reduces activity and increases risk for rheophilic fish.
  • Mixing slow species: they can be outcompeted at feeding time.

Check whether your rasboras, danios, loaches and gobies share flow, temperature and space before combining them.
