Hillstream / Asian Mountain Rivers

Fast-flowing oxygen-rich river systems with smooth stones and strong current, inspired by Asian mountain streams.

Ecological identity

What makes this biome unique

A hillstream setup is built around fast current, high oxygen, smooth rocks and mature biofilm-covered surfaces. It is not just an aquarium with a powerful pump: it must provide flow, resting zones and natural grazing surfaces.

How to recreate it

Use a long aquarium, lengthwise current, smooth rocks, shaded areas and resting breaks behind stones. Let the tank mature enough to grow biofilm before adding specialized grazers.

Rounded stones River pebbles Minimal wood Strong current Highly oxygenated zones
Best for

Aquarist profile

For advanced aquarists who want to observe clinging fish, grazers and active rheophilic species. It is a technical setup where oxygenation and maturity matter as much as volume.

Not recommended

Avoid it if...

Not recommended for slow fish, bettas, gouramis, warm stagnant-water species or young aquariums without biofilm. It also fails if temperature rises too much in summer.

Maintenance

Expected routine

Check flow, clean prefilters and prevent pumps from losing performance. High oxygen and moderate temperature are critical for biome stability.

Example aquarium

Suggested composition

Example aquarium: 90-160 liter long tank, circulation pumps, rounded rocks, oversized filtration and moderate temperature. Ideal for Sewellia, Beaufortia, Stiphodon and compatible current-loving fish.

Suggested species
Zebra danio White cloud mountain minnow Siamese algae eater Zebra loach Hillstream loach Butterfly hillstream loach Borneo sucker Panda garra
Recommended plants

Plants must tolerate current: Microsorum, Bolbitis, small Anubias, well-attached mosses and Bucephalandra. The main element remains mature rock surfaces with biofilm.

Common mistakes explained

What usually breaks this biome

  • Insufficient current: turns the setup into a normal community and harms rheophilic species.
  • High temperature: reduces available oxygen and increases stress.
  • Immature aquarium: grazers may lack natural food.
  • No resting zones: even current-loving fish need hydrodynamic shelter.

Check whether your species fit this biome

Before building a hillstream tank, check that your species tolerate strong current, moderate temperature and highly oxygenated water.
